Abstract: Global warming, mass tourism and delivery of goods helps the appearance and proliferation not only of new vector species, but very serious illnesses too. During the past years the rapid Southern-Northern spread of the invasive tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has been well noted. The Zika-virus battle has just started. While the safety of humans remains the major target, the available tools are rapidly decreasing, as a number of insecticides and larvicides are either lost, or their use is more and more restricted because of the European Biocidal Product Regulation.
In some of the EU Member States chemical mosquito treatment is still the most common, while the more efficient and environmentally safer biological larviciding remains less favoured. S-methoprene Insect Growth Regulator based formulations have been successfully used for decades, especially in the USA, Canada, Australia, but less in Europe. A number of formulations has been recently developed and introduced primarily against Aedes and Culex species. The S-methoprene based BIOPREN® granule, liquid, tablet and pump spray formulations permit their use in a wide range of water systems and different environmental conditions. According to the laboratory and field studies, 2 to 6 weeks’ residuality can be achieved. Some formulations are suitable for professional, others for amateur use. From resistance management point of view the interchange use of Bti and S-methoprene formulations are of extreme importance. The poster presentation wishes to introduce these formulations, target species, their application and efficacy results.
